“Emotional release and muscular release are interdependent - one does not occur without the other.”

What is Dance/Movement Therapy?

Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) is a type of expressive art therapy which utilizes movement, rhythm, and the mind-body connection to express, communicate, cope, and gain insight. You do not need to have a background in dance or special abilities to engage in Dance/Movement Therapy. It’s not a dance or exercise class and you won’t be judged during a session. Rather, DMT can be used in conjunction with traditional talk therapy or done on its own.

As a dance/movement therapist I believe nonverbal language is just as important as verbal language and use both forms of communication in the therapeutic process. Movement can be functional, communicative, and expressive. By observing movement and using methods to increase the mind-body connection, clients can increase access to their authentic feelings and better understand their own mind, body, and behavior. Prior clients report feeling more connected to themselves and increased joy in life from engaging in Dance/Movement Therapy.

Dance/Movement Therapy can also be done in a small group format as well. Coming Fall 2022, Mindful Counseling and Wellness LLC will be offering Dance/Movement Therapy groups to Assisted Living Facilities, Nursing Homes, After-School programs, and Hospitals in the Milwaukee area.
